Abstract

This chapter introduces the notion of registers of semiotic representations and explains how it relates to the cognitive functioning of mathematical thinking. It first explains how these registers operate in the kind of thinking that requires the use of natural languages and the different types of discursive operations. After that, it discusses the specificities of geometrical figures regarding the registers of semiotic representations.
