Abstract

The importance of map data as an aid for interpreting digital map data is stressed and a process for automatically interpreting SAR images using digital map data is described. This paper deals mainly with the first part of this process, which involves registering the SAR image and the digital map data by identifying matching features in the SAR image and map data, using template matching. The advantages and disadvantages of using raster map data as opposed to vector map data are discussed. Methods are described for selecting suitable features for matching from the map data and then matching them to features in the SAR image and for selecting suitable features for matching from the SAR image and them matching them to features in the map data.
