Abstract

Three novel highly functionalized fullerene derivatives, 4,11,15,30-tetraalkoxyphenyl fullereno[1,2:2′,3′]dihydrobenzofurans, were prepared by the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of hexachlorfullerene C60Cl6 and corresponding phenol ethers with high yields. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic data and single-crystal X-ray analysis. The potential application of these highly functionalized fullerene derivatives as stabilizers in double-base propellants was investigated. Results show that these highly functionalized fullerene derivatives had excellent scavenging abilities for nitroxide free radicals produced by nitrocellulose pyrolysis, thereby inhibiting the autocatalytic decomposition of nitrocellulose and stabilizing the double-base propellant.
