Abstract
Irradiation of hypoiodites of steroidal α-oxo tertiary alcohols in the presence of mercury(II) oxide and iodine in benzene gave α-hydroxy Iµ-lactones and enolic Iµ-lactone; the mechanism of their formation is discussed on the basis of an 18O labelling study.
