Abstract

This essay explores the extent to which works published in the RVN between 1954 and 1975 constituted a coherent body of scholarship. Through a case study of the ways in which scholars represented the nam tiến in the journals of the DRV and the RVN, it makes an argument for using regionalism as an interpretive framework through which to examine the latent coherence in RVN scholarship. Particular attention is devoted to tracing the legacy of Nguyễn Dynasty historiography in important RVN publications, such as Tập San Sử Địa, Báo Bách Khoa, and Việt Nam Khảo Cổ Tập San.
