Abstract

This chapter provides the overview of the book. It discusses ASEAN Regionalism as the context, highlighting how it is characterised by multitrack diplomacy, dialogue forums, and deliberation. The chapter also explains how this context leaves room for a group of individuals actors to contribute significantly in the regionalisation process, as clearly shown in the history of ASEAN. This chapter also discusses the background, the significance, and the approach applied in answering the main question of this research: how was it that the group of individual actors, conceptualised as the Norm Interpreters, were able to successfully challenge the anti-human rights consensus in the region, and enable the creation of space and opportunity for the ASEAN regional human right’s body (AICHR), inaugurated in Bangkok in 2009?
