Abstract

Introduction: The iliotibial band (ITB) is a common site of injury for runners, yet little is known of its dynamic function. A curious feature of the ITB is that it transmits force across the knee from two seemingly antagonist muscles: gluteus maximus (GM) and tensor fascia latae (TFL). While we have previously suggested that there may be different force transmission pathways from each muscle through the ITB, there is currently a lack of empirical evidence.
