Abstract

Surgical care accounts for a large portion of the rapidly rising national health care expenditure. At the same time, price determinants in healthcare often lack transparency, for both providers and patients. We seek to better understand price determinants for routine surgical procedures. Regional variations may provide insight into the market forces driving health care costs. Using national data, we determined whether there was state-level variation in the cost of a single common surgical procedure and whether we could explain this variation by adjusting for covariates associated with cost.
