Abstract

Since 1986 the regional planning of commercial spaceports in the United States has been an activity of regional and city planners and state and local government officials. In 2000, numerous states were composing regional plans for numerous commercial spaceports throughout the U.S. This article presents a brief history of the emergence of the commercial space industry and spaceports and a description of regional goals, issues, policies, and planning methods. Regional planning initiatives for commercial spaceports are presented and compared to illuminate common regional planning principles.
