Abstract
Between 1996 and the end of 2000 there were six projects in Europe -joint initiatives of the European Union and scientific/industrial consortia -addressing the topic of community health information networks. These projects focused on the exploitation and implementation of results in the field of healthcare telematics and telemedicine applications and services. Previously isolated system-and application modules where to be integrated according to the needs of professionals and patients. These projects significantly facilitated the development of the specific field of business “healthcare telematics” which can now be considered as established. Nowadays, new mobile systems enable even more comprehensive services.
