Abstract

What determines the composition of governments at the regional level? A large literature has investigated the logic of government formation for national governments. Regional governments have received much less attention. Yet examination of the regional level holds general promise, since factors that sometimes complicate cross-national comparisons are held constant when treating subnational variation in one country. Spain offers an especially important arena in which to probe the analytical leverage of arguments originally assessed at the national level. In brief, Spain evinces substantial diversity among its subnational party systems, significant powers of its regional governments, and a pronounced disjuncture between patterns of regional government formation and findings for cross-national research.KeywordsBasque CountryParty SystemSpanish RegionBalearic IslandGovernment FormationThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
