Abstract

Increasing climate aridity and the unavoidable changes closely related to this process, such as those in the topsoil herbage, soil composition, and soil properties, form one of the most acute problems in southern Russia. Desertification is observed in the following districts of Rostov oblast: Zavetinskii, Remontnenskii, Dubovskii, Zimovnikovskii, and Orlovskii. According to the data provided by the Yuzhgiprozem, the total area of desertificated soils in Rostov oblast is 5789200 ha. Research on changes in soil properties under the new conditions should be intensified because of the unfavorable prognosis with respect to climatic components.
