Abstract
Abstract The overall number of deaths in Finland between 1816 and 1865 was 1,893,000. Their regional distribution is the subject of this article. The first division that needs to be made is between rural districts and towns: rural districts are again sub-divided into 43 deaneries; there were 29 towns in 1815 and 32 in 1866. Differences both in the crude death rate and in infant mortality will be examined. We also intend to analyse the causes of death, especially in relation to those infectious diseases which can be identified with reasonable certainty (see appendix tables 3 and 4). Finally, differences in regional mortality rates in Finland will be compared with conditions in European Russia and Sweden.
