Abstract

ABE H. and ALDEN J. D. (1988) Regional development planning in Japan, Reg. Studies 22, 429–438. Regional income disparities have been a longstanding issue of concern in Japan, although overshadowed by the problems facing the largest cities. The paper reviews the experience of regional development planning within the context of recent trends in regional income inequalities. It shows that while regional income disparities were reduced in the period 1960–75, they have been increasing again in recent years. An assessment is made of the statutory framework of regional development planning in Japan, and the paper refers to some examples of regional planning practice which illustrate its past performance and current vitality.
