Abstract

There is vast confusion about regional loss of bone mass. It has been difficult to demonstrate the pathogenesis of several disorders including transitory demineralization, migratory osteoporosis, Sudeck’s bone atrophy and idiopathic femoral head necrosis. However, recent advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have revealed the pathogenesis of these disorders, and these disorders should be classified as “circulatory disturbances” rather than “osteoporosis”. Therefore, it is important to differentiate regional demineralization from systemic osteoporosis and to demonstrate the pathophysiology of bone mineral loss in osteoporosis.
