Abstract
The paper deals with three relevant questions for the European Union: the degrees of regional inequality, polarisation and mobility in the per capita regional income distributions between 1980 and 1996. Using different techniques, the paper shows that inter-regional inequality has slightly decreased, there is no apparent polarisation and the degree of mobility is relatively high. Despite this, the speed of all these three aspects has declined over time, which is interesting for polarisation but raises some worries about convergence and mobility for the future.
