Abstract

AbstractThe haor region of Bangladesh has a wetland ecosystem. Most linking roads become submerged from May to October of the year and movement is mainly possible by boat only. However, motorized vehicle transportation is possible only in major towns of that region. People face greater challenges in transportation than those in other parts of the country. In this chapter, we explain the socio-economic developmental situation of the target region as compared to national development based on the government statistical data. It is clarified that the target area is behind the national average level in almost all the socio-economic development indicators such as literacy rate, household income, gender equality, and institutional collaboration etc. Although, the haor region covers about 12% of the total geographical area, it contributes about 22% of the total rice (staple food) production of the country. Poverty is more acute in the haor region due to lack of market access and power supply, and limited presence of financial institutions.KeywordsAgricultural productionSocio-economic developmentHaor regionKishoreganj districtBangladesh
