Abstract

Abstract Regional and ethnic associations were one of the earliest types of voluntary society in early modern Britain, and we can identify distinct phases m their development and organization. County feast societies possibly originated before the calling of the Long Parliament, but their first surge of activity, with annual meetings, processions, sermon , and dinners, occurred during the 1650s. After the Restoration there were new clusters of meetings, especially in the later part of Charles II’s reign, and a final burst of activity followed the Glorious Revolution.
