Abstract

This chapter examines the role of regimental officers and rank and file members in the manifold weaknesses of the British Army during its war with Germany in 1939. The problems in recruitment and training of soldiers affected the combat capability of the British Army. When an appropriate personnel selection system was established in 1942, it was used in conformity with its doctrine which prescribed that battles were won by machinery. This led to the deployment of the best men into the technologically intensive arms of the service and the worst men into the infantry. In addition to this, the soldiers were not trained to intelligently appreciate their part in a battle.
