Abstract

Using techniques developed from the North American potato cultivar Russet Burbank, 10850 viable calli were produced from mesophyll-derived protoplasts of seven British potato cultivars: Maris Piper, Bard, Feltwell, Foxton, Teal, Kingston and F49/52. Calli from all cultivars except Kingston and F49/52 formed shoots and roots. The frequency of shoot formation ranged from 2.4% to 26.7% among single leaf samples, with a mean frequency of 14%. The implications of these results for potato cultivar improvement are discussed.
