Abstract
Enacting and implementing the asylum laws by which a State is bound is not an easy process. Greece, a country of lenient traditions as far as the temporary presence of foreigners is concerned, but which has generally discouraged their local integration, has in the past few years taken steps towards the full implementation of the asylum procedures. In this context it is participating in the harmonisation measures envisaged or adopted by the European States and it is updating its national legislation. It is also organising its asylum procedures accordingly. The results of these developments, although positive overall, have occasionally had an adverse effect on the issues of protection of the refugees and asylum seekers. Certain groups of refugees have faced inadequate protection, while the asylum procedure itself has not been effective at all times. It is hoped that the new legislative measures envisaged, as well as the role of the non-governmental organizations, will have a positive effect on the situation of the refugees in Greece
