Abstract

This article discusses major opportunities for nuclear power generation in outer space. Recent developments in refractory metals manufacture and fabrication technologies are ripe for implementation in these orbiting power stations. Refractory metals offer strength to weight, heat transfer and containment advantages. Advances in tube forming and weldability, as well as development of property data for new alloy systems are current research priorities.
