Abstract

An approach for calculating the mode conversion coefficients at optical fiber splices and connectors for any kind of fiber refractive-index profiles is developed. The method takes account of the azimuthal properties of modes which play an important role in the mode coupling phenomena. The approach can be also used to evaluate the splice losses in single-mode fibers.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
