Abstract

Geometrical Optics theory (GO) is effective to analyze and process high-frequency wave propagation in the case of short-wavelength or high-frequency limit. Using the ray tracing methods of GO, the ray paths of electromagnetic wave propagation are simulated in the standard atmosphere and the evaporation duct environment. The simulation results show that evaporation duct can significantly trap some radio rays to extend the propagation distance of EM wave and result in the appearance of radar blind zone. For radar target detection in duct environment, the ray tracing technique was used to calculate the error of propagation range, elevation angle and target height in the standard atmosphere and evaporation duct environment. Refractive error correction in evaporation duct has a beneficial effect on radar target detection.
