Abstract

The Police and Criminal Evidence Act of 1984 is the initial legislative attempt by the British Parliament to enact a comprehensive code of police powers and practices as they relate to criminal investigation procedures. Prior to the enactment of this legislation, the law regulating police powers of criminal investigation was vague, piecemeal, and antiquated. The purpose of this article is to identify, analyse, and critically evaluate some of the more salient provisions of the Act as they impact upon English criminal procedure.
