Abstract
<p>The paper highlighted some of the issues and challenges facing teacher education in Nigeria. These include: Government’s neglect of the education sector, poor funding and shortage of qualified teachers to meet the manpower needs at all levels of the educational system in Nigeria. The paper also highlighted some global best practices in countries like Finland, Canada, Singapore and Australia. The paper recommended that a conscious and conscientious effort needs to be<strong> </strong>made to refocus teacher education in Nigeria. Teacher education policies need to be implemented in practical terms to provide highly motivated, conscientious, and efficient classroom teachers for all levels of education in Nigeria.
