Abstract

The major changes that have occurred in recent decades in the practice of medicine have prompted the belief that informed consent (IC), based on the patient”s right to his or her autonomy and self-determination, is the sole justification of the legitimacy of the medical act. If the informed consent document (ICD) complies with ethical and legal requisites, it is the only written documental support that demonstrates that the patient has received and understood the information provided by the doctor. We drew up a model ICD, which we applied to carry out an objective evaluation of 121 ICD. The results of the study show the limited evolution of deontological doctrine concerning IC and reveal the urgent need to update these documents.
