Abstract
1. 1. Stretch of hind limb muscles in decerebrate blue tongue lizards was shown to evoke autogenetic reflex contraction. 2. 2. Ventral root and intracellular recording demonstrated the presence of monosynaptic as well as polysynaptic pathways between dorsal root fibres and motoneurones. 3. 3. Monosynaptic excitation of motoneurones could be evoked by electrically or stretch-evoked afferent input from muscle, but not from skin, as in mammals. 4. 4. It is conjectured that acquisition of a stretch-reflex mechanism may have been significant in the colonisation of dry land by primitive reptiles, including the ancestors of mammals.
