Abstract
At the first conference of the Division of Counselling Psychology, we presented a paper entitled “Do counsellors know what they are doing?” which addressed the issue of reflective practice, and, in particular, the necessity for counsellors to be aware of the assumptions and beliefs which underlie their work. An academic analysis of this problem has been published under the title “Critical thinking and reflective practice in counselling” (Irving and Williams, 1995). Here, we explore the practical aspects of such self-knowledge as they apply to counselling practice.
