Abstract

FL teachers, by their present attitude towards the use of computers in education, may jeopardize the future of second-language instruction. Our needs in computer hardware and software are quite different from those in the sciences; they will not be met unless we become active participants in the development of CAI. The intelligent utilization of computers should allow a better use of the teachers' talents and may create a need for more language teachers. The conditions under which the effectiveness of computerized materials can be demonstrated are examined. The French program at the University of Illinois is analyzed.
