Abstract
I WAS THE NUT (National Union of Teachers) rep in my school. The majority of the staff were NUT members and had agonised long and hard over the action that the union was asking them to take. First, they all decided not to support the action; then some decided to support it. Splits appeared in what had been a harmonious team and relationships disintegrated.
