We thought 2020 would never be behind us. 2021 will be better, maybe significantly. I am preparing this column in early December at a particularly grim time. COVID-19 is peaking, with new cases, hospitalizations, and deaths seeming to rise daily. The pandemic has brought about the worst economic crisis in our lifetime and has occurred against a backdrop of social and political strife. It is very likely as this February issue hits, the situation will still be difficult. An article published on December 4 in The Atlantic, “The U.S. Has Passed the Hospital Breaking Point,” described the difficult winter ahead. However, the concluding paragraph acknowledged: Our members and ASA have certainly risen to the challenge and are well positioned for the future.
