Abstract
Summary This essay begins with a comparison of two major events in the development of the “conciliar process”, the European Ecumenical Assembly, Basel (15–21 May 1989) and the World Convocation of Churches, Seoul (6–12 March 1990), and the underlying ecumenical agenda for Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC). Both events are traced in the evolution of their structures with particular emphasis upon the documents which were presented to the two gatherings for discussion and adaptation. Interest is focused upon the theological underpinnings of the respective documents, particularly the covenant theology expressed in each of the events. It is observed that while the Basel Assembly was meticulously organized and executed, the Convocation in Seoul expressed a more existential experience of contrast that could not be reduced to the parameters of the more structured, systematic approach of the ecumenical gathering that took place in Basel.
