Abstract

Prepared for the press by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dalia Nasvytienė, Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences, Department of Developmental and Educational Psychology, Studentų St. 39, LT-08106 Vilnius, Lithuania, dalia.nasvytiene@leu.lt I have at least two reasons why I consider this text to be of value. First and above all, it is the author’s personality. Marija Garbaciauskienė is a very authoritative expert in developmental psychology in Lithuania and a honorary member of the Lithuanian Psychological Association. Her unique experience and a highly focused professional activity allow making an unbiased evaluation of the current scientific status of developmental psychology in general and issues on periodization in particular. This overview embraces references to the works of Prof. A. Gucas, Prof. I. Užgirienė, Prof. R. Žukauskienė – to name but a few representatives of three generations of Lithuanian developmental psychologists. The author introduces the reader to the global context of research on developmental transitions analysing the positions of J. Piaget, A. Bandura, P. Baltes, B. Ananyev et al. The other reason is that our scientific literature is short of such texts, i.e. deep reflections, evidences of broad perspective. The author’s contextual approach convinces the reader that scientific thought should be valued not only as a product but it should also take the origins of the issue into consideration and include polemics with other topic-related authors. I strongly advise this text to those who are searching for reliable knowledge, original sources, authentic citation, precision of thought, and culture of scientific discussion. Keywords: life-span development, developmental stages and transitions, human individuality, personality. How to cite: Garbaciauskienė, M. (2015).
