Abstract

The growth of large single crystals for X-ray diffraction studies on proteins is still predominantly empirical. Factors that influence protein solubility and crystallization are discussed mainly on the basis of the repulsive forces existing between like-charged particles in solution. Common sources of disadvantageous protein heterogeneity that arise during isolation and crystallization are described together with possibilities of preventing bacterial growth in crystallization experiments.
