Abstract

We calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients for a spin wave, which hits a steplike discontinuity of one or more atomic layers height. Both exchange and anisotropy interactions are included. We find a surprisingly strong confinement effect in ultrathin films. Using parameters typical for ferromagnetic metals, the reflection coefficient at the interface between a single-atomic-layer film and a film of two atomic layers is greater than 90%.
