Abstract

The scattering of radiowaves by a multilayered medium with large-scale roughnesses of the boundaries and inhomogeneities of the permittivity of the layers is theoretically studied. It is shown that there are different mechanisms resulting in the oscillating dependence of the incoherent component of the reflected power Pic on the inverse wavelength λ-1 and the layer thicknesses. It is also shown that for weak reflections the fading effect of scattering for an n-layered medium is at least of orderPic/Pc ∼ (σh1/λ)2n, whereσh12 is the dispersion of roughnesses of the upper boundary and Pc is the coherent component of the reflected power.
