Abstract

The author discusses the reflection from a semi-infinite inhomogeneous atmosphere in the case of general laws of incoherent scattering. The question of determination of the reflection function for the atmosphere as well as the mean number of scatterings of the reflected photons is investigated. Ambartsumyan's invariance principle is used to obtain equations for these quantities. The approach developed earlier for the solution of such problems in the case of a homogeneous atmosphere is generalized to an inhomogeneous medium. The results of numerical calculations in a special case are given as an illustration.
