Abstract

The variational approach and integral equation method are applied to the problem of surfacemode reflection from an abruptly terminated planar dielectric waveguide. The theory is illustrated by an example of the reflection problem for a three-layer structure with constant and gradient refractive index profiles. The differences between mode-reflection characteristics for symmetric and asymmetric refractive index profiles are discussed.
