Abstract

Serious mental illnesses often have their onset before age 20. Early identification and treatment is critical in minimizing the long-term effects of mental illness. We have made great strides in our understanding of children's behavioral health difficulties and how to treat them. But many challenges remain-from gaps in insurance coverage to inadequate public understanding of children's behavioral health-and not all youth who need services are able to access them in a timely fashion. The National Council for Behavioral Health offers many programs to address the challenges.
