Abstract

Optical properties of nonabsorbing turbid slurries were studied by reflectometric techniques. Two types of industrial slurries were investigated. The one slurry contained spherical plastic pigments, whereas the other consisted of irregularly shaped calcium carbonate particles in water. The refractive index of the plastic pigment particle was calculated, with the aid of a light-scattering model, as a function of wavelength by using reflectometric data. In addition, the effective refractive index of the plastic pigment slurry was obtained with the use of a surface plasmon resonance sensor. Although analysis of reflectometric data for calcium carbonate slurries is cumbersome, it was possible to obtain information about the volume concentration of optically birefringent particles in water.
