Abstract

A local-field formalism is used to calculate the roughness-induced reflectance change of Al with a rough ${\mathrm{Al}}_{2}$${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ overlayer for normally incident light. Calculations are done for both gratings and randomly rough surfaces. We include a nonlocal response for the Al; this changes the surface-plasmon dispersion relation at large wave vectors and has a significant effect on the reflectance spectrum when the scale of roughness is small.
