Abstract

When most think of hair transplantation, the perception is that of restoring hair to the scalp in areas that have suffered hair loss. However, over the last decade, there has been a significant increased demand with patients for facial hair transplantation procedures. Partly as a consequence of social, fashion, and cultural trends, patients are seeking restoration of thinning eyebrows and the transplantation of hair to the beard in ever-increasing numbers. Refinements in techniques in hair transplantation have allowed for the restoration of beard hair and eyebrow hair with very natural appearing results. Pick up any of the latest fashion magazines and you see female models with thick, full eyebrows, or men sporting full beards. Facial hair transplantation is a subspecialty within hair restoration, which while provides many benefits to the hair restoration patient it is also very rewarding to the hair restoration surgeon. Adapting these advanced techniques into a hair restoration practice allows a surgeon to offer their patients these procedures and provides an expanded artistic element to a hair restoration surgeon’s practice. In this chapter, hair restoration surgeons will learn how to best select a candidate for facial hair and eyebrow restoration, fine tune the technical and surgical aspects of the procedures, become aware of potential pitfalls, and learn how to best prevent and handle complications of these procedures.
