Abstract

Single crystals of γ-Ca 2SiO 4 were synthesized by the flux method, and the crystals large enough for X-ray single crystal study was obtained using CaCl 2 as the flux. 581 independent diffraction intensities were collected by an automatic single crystal diffractometer. The structure was refined with the full-matrix least-squares procedure to the final R-value of 0.037 with anisotropic temperature factors. The structure obtained confirms that γ-Ca 2SiO 4 has the olivine type structure based on a distorted hexagonal close-packed arrangement of oxygen atoms and the octahedra are extremely distorted.
