Abstract

The reference hypernetted-chain theory is solved for the structure of the dipolar hard sphere fluid next to the curved suface of isolated macroions of varying diameters and surface charges. For neutral surfaces this structure is found to be very insensitive to surface curvature and in good agreement with previous results for planar walls. It is, however, easily ruptured by a moderate charge on the surface, transforming into a sharply layered structure extending several diameters away from the surface. The relationship of this behaviour to that in more realistic models is discussed.
