Reexamination of the iron-smelting structure in Sokjang-ni, Jincheon

Abstract

충북지역의 고대 제철유적은 10개소로 이 유적들에서 확인된 제철로는 대부분 제련로이다. 제련로의 평면은 원형이며 축조방법은 두 가지로 나뉜다. 축조방법의 차이점은 할석의 사용 유무이지만 청원 연제리유적을 제외하면 유적들의 연대는 대체로 대동소이하다. 석장리유적은 토기편년상 A지구에서 B지구로 순차적으로 이동하면서 조업이 이루어진 대규모의 철생산 유적이다. 석장리유적에서는 동일한 제철시설임에도 불구하고 이견이 있는 시설이 있는데, 그것은 A-4·8·9호, B-2호 등이다. 전자는 제련·정련·용해 등으로, 후자는 제사 혹은 제철시설로 본다. 특히 A-4호의 A-4-1호는 평면형태와 배재구로 추정되는 부분 때문에 일본의 상형로와 비교되었으나 현재는 부정하는 의견이 있다. 이견이 생긴 이유는 슬래그층 위에 조성된 맥락에서 벗어 나지 못하고 구덩이를 제외한 것들을 제철시설로만 판단했기 때문이다. 재검토 결과 A-4호는 쪽구들(A-4-1호)을 갖춘 수혈주거지이며, B-2호도 동일한 성격으로 추정 된다. 정련로 혹은 단야로로 본 A-4-2호는 정련로와 단야로의 판단기준에 상응하는 증거가 검출되지 않았으며, 이 시설이 조성된 A-4호의 형태와 토층상의 문제점으로 보아 현재로서는 제철로의 가능성이 희박하다. A-8호와 A-9호는 잔존한 형태, 소토부의 형태 및 위치, 장벽에 붙은 도랑 등으로 볼 때 수혈주거지의 특징과 유사하다. B-‘라’호는 B-‘나’·‘다’호를 고려하면 화덕시설을 갖춘 수혈 주거지로 생각된다.There are ten iron processing structures from ancient South Chungcheong Province, most of which are iron-smelting sites. The iron-smelting sites have a round cross-section, and show two construction methods. The difference between the two construction methods lies in whether talc was used. Except for Yonje-ri site at Chongwon, the archaeological sties have similar dates. The Sokjang-ni site is an iron-production site of great scale, formed by sequential movements from A region to B region, based on pottery chronology. Despite being identical iron manufacture structures, A-4.8.9 and B-2 have been associated with different opinions. The former is regarded as a structure for iron-smelting, tempering, and melting; the latter as an iron production site. In particular, A-4-1 of the A-4 structure has been compared to the equivalent site in Japan; although there is disagreement. Some of the features in Sokjang-ni site are still under controversy. The results of the reexamination shows that A-4 and B-2 are pit dwellings equipped with partial floor heating system. A-8 and A-9, which were previously interpreted as smelting or melting furnaces, show strong evidence that they were actually pit dwellings equipped with the floor heating system. B-Ra and B-Na-Da structures are also thought to be pit dwellings with floor heating system.
