Abstract

One method of speech rehabilitation involves the use of an external reed, activated by tracheal air flow, with the resultant sound conveyed into the pharynx through a surgical fistula. When the oral structures articulate this sound, speech can be produced. This study of seven patients speaking by this method indicates that speech can be of good quality and can be developed in a short period. The reed-fistula method will work in patients with extensive pharyngeal resection in whom esophageal speech is not possible. Further studies are necessary to solve some of the problems associated with the management of pharyngeal fistulas.
