Abstract

A kinetic investigation has been carried out on the reduction of some aromatic ketones (acetophenone, 1; 2-methoxyacetophenone, 2; 3-methoxyacetophenone, 3; 4-methoxyacetophenone, 4; and α-tetralone, 5) by sodium borohydride in the presence of two cationic surfactants (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB, and cetyltrimethylammonium cloride, CTAC). The experimental results have been treated with the pseudophase ionic exchange model, the parameters relative to the transfer equilibria of both reagents being experimentally determined. There was a decrease (20- to 50-fold) of the second-order reaction rate constants in the micellar pseudophase relative to those in water. The inhibition can be ascribed mostly to specific micellar interactions because the reaction is not appreciably sensitive to medium polarity.
