Abstract

Since 1977 dioxins were detected in fly ashes from waste incineration plants; this class of compounds is of major importance concerning the acceptance of this technology. Extended research and development revealed in short time the main formation mechanism of dioxins, the importance of good combustion control, the influence of halogens and sulphur, and paved the way for strategies for minimisation of formation, and efficient abatement. The main steps in this development as well as the current situation are described.
