Abstract

Problem of reducing the stress concentration at a hole in an infinite sheet by reinforcement is considered. The analysis is carried out by describing the sheet according to plane stress elasticity theory and the reinforcement as a beam. Results for a typical reinforcement show that the maximum stress can be reduced from 3S to 0.6S, where S is the one-dimensional uniform tension applied to the sheet.
